Retailed by James Braham
Mid-19th Century
This wheel barometer, retailed by James Braham of Torquay, measures atmospheric pressure ranging from 28 to 31 inches of mercury. The mahogany casing also incorporates a mercury thermometer with designations for Blood Heat, Sum’r Heat, Tempe Rate and Freezing levels. Such meteorological instruments were once indispensable to gauging the coming weather. While many households had a barometer on their wall, only the most important and wealthy would have had an instrument of this caliber.
