Description

Made for a prominent member of California’s early political sphere, this circa 1870 gold-mounted walking cane is a rare and astonishing piece of Gold Rush history. The discovery of gold in California soil in 1848 ushered in an onslaught of hopeful prospectors who forever changed the social, political, and economic fabric of the West. Among these hopefuls, very few found the wealth they sought, but many of those who did, experienced it in abundance.

Armed with riches and political power, the few individuals who made millions established themselves as the power brokers of California. To fit an aristocratic image, they transformed an already essential item of any well-heeled wardrobe — the luxury walking cane. This gold-mounted cane features a top-baring gold embedded in white quartz, exactly how it appeared when mined. Cherished for their value and symbolism, these canes are exceptionally rare and sought after.

The cane is further enhanced by its exceptional provenance. It was made as a gift to the Hon. Hugh Bell Newell, a prominent member of the California State Assembly and a notable figure in the Gold Hill mining community. Both highly expensive and difficult to make, this cane represented Newell’s political importance and symbolized the deep gratitude the State Assembly held for his leadership.
